Wedding
Kiss
The kiss at the end of the ceremony is more than just a kiss. The kiss symbolizes
a bond created between the newlyweds. Anciently is was believed that when
the couple kissed, they shared some of their spirit with each other.
Threshold
Carry
The Groom carries the Bride over the threshold to protect her from the Evil
Spirits.
Something
Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue
Something Old was usually a small token, given by the Mother of the Bride,
which represented some wisdom concerning marriage that is passed from Mother
to Daughter.
Something New was for the new couple beginning their new family together.
Something Borrowed came from a happily married woman. This item was as if
the happily married woman was sharing a bit of her happiness with the bride.
The happiness continues in the newlywed couple’s marriage.
Something Blue is associated with Purity and Love.
Ring
Finger
Choosing the 3rd finger from the right on the left hand for the ring finger
was chosen because of an old belief. People believed that there was a vein
that went from that finger to the heart.
Bridesmaids
Friends of the Bride would dress up like the bride so that evil spirits and/or
jealous men would not be able to recognize which girl was the bride. This
was to ensure the safe arrival of the Bride to the wedding ceremony. Now,
the brides just all dress alike, versus like the bride.
Veil
The veil started out as a disguise for the Bride. She wore the veil in hopes
that evil spirits would not recognizer her as the Bride.
Why
June?
June
seems to be the popular month to get married. Why? Simple, in olden time people
did not take baths nearly as often as we do. May was a common time to take
one of their few baths a yea -- if not their only bath during the year. In
June, people still smelled pleasant.
Rice
Throwing
Throwing rice or other grains was a symbol of wishing a prosperous life.
